DERBY, CT - In its facilities, Griffin Hospital has the staff and equipment to cure, care for, and heal. But the hospital's newest technology to promote everyday health can be found in an unlikely source - its food vending machines.
Starting this summer, the hospital's vending machines, which carry everything from soft drinks to bottled water to sandwiches and ice cream, will begin to display NuVal scores for each item. The NuVal Nutritional Scoring System ranks all foods on a scale of 1 to 100. The higher the score, the higher the foods' overall nutrition. Griffin Hospital helped create NuVal in 2008 with Dr. David Katz, Director of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center.
"A hospital is where you come to feel better, where health is our number one concern, and education is a large part of that," said Beth...
