DERBY, CT (April 16, 2010) - The Bariatric Surgery Center at Griffin Hospital will host a Weight Loss Surgery Health Fair from 6:00 - 9:00 pm Thursday, April 29, at the Trumbull Marriott, 180 Hawley Lane in Trumbull. The free event is open to all weight loss surgery patients and those considering weight loss surgery.

The Health Fair will feature keynote speaker Khaliah Ali, lap-band weight loss surgery patient and daughter of legendary heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali. Ms. Ali, who is also an Emmy-nominated talk show host, former Ford model, and a fashion designer with her own line of clothing, will describe her life-long struggle with obesity, which she chronicled in her book, "Fighting Weight," published by Harper Collins.

Bariatric surgeon Timothy Ehrlich, MD, FACS, Director of the Bariatric Surgery Center at Griffin Hospital, will moderate a Q&A session with Ms. Ali, and also discuss the latest bariatric surgery options available for patients....

DERBY, CT: The Griffin Hospital Inpatient Psychiatric Unit recently received the 2004 Honorable Mention Award from the Connecticut Real Estate Exchange, a statewide organization that recognizes Connecticut projects that have had a "positive impact on the State and their communities, overcoming significant economic, geographic, bureaucratic or environmental obstacles."

The presentation was made to the S/L/A/M Collaborative of Glastonbury and Albis Turlington Architects of New Haven. The S/L/A/M Collaborative was responsible for the interior design of the renovation; Albis Turlington was architect of record for the project. Opened last June, the new inpatient psychiatric unit completes the integration of the Planetree philosophy of patient-centered care...

Derby, CT - Griffin Hospital is pleased to announce the expansion of the Planetree model of patient-centered care into its newly renovated Inpatient Psychiatric Unit. The new psychiatric unit completes the integration of the Planetree philosophy of patient centered care throughout the hospital.

The new facility at Griffin Hospital is a 14 bed acute care psychiatric unit. The mission of the unit is to provide effective psychiatric care in a safe, peaceful environment that incorporates the Planetree programmatic elements. Traditional therapeutic approaches that include individual and group therapy are enhanced with complementary services such as patient education, aroma therapy, arts and entertainment and journaling.
