DERBY, CT (April 9, 2012) – Expectant parents, new parents and their families can get a good feel for the area’s maternity and child care resources from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5 at Griffin Hospital’s 2012 Annual Baby Fair.

Held at The Childbirth Center at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division Street in Derby, this free event features more than 40 exhibitors, door prizes, tours of the Childbirth Center and information about the Center’s classes and support groups for before and after childbirth.

Griffin Hospital offers family-centered maternity care in an environment to best meet individual and family needs with private, family-friendly rooms, expert staff for maternal and newborn care, and lactation consultants.

DERBY, CT (March 27, 2012) – Low income families in Valley will be better equipped to keep their children safe thanks to a recent grant to Griffin Hospital’s Valley Parish Nurse Safe Kids Greater Naugatuck Valley Chapter.

BJ’s Charitable Foundation awarded $5,000 to the chapter for infant and booster car seats that will be made available to families in need through car seat clinics in the community.

DERBY, CT (September 19, 2011) - New and expectant parents are invited to attend a free Baby Fair hosted by Griffin Hospital’s Childbirth Center from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 24 at Griffin Hospital.

Dr. Howard Quentzel, Chief of Infectious Diseases at Griffin Hospital, Karen Spargo, Director, Naugatuck Valley Health District, and Deborah Horvath, APRN, Assistant Director of Community Health at the Naugatuck Valley Health District, will host an information session about H1N1 influenza on Wednesday, November 18, at 6:30 pm at the Griffin Hospital, 130 Division Street, Derby, CT.

Dr. Quentzel will give an overview of CDC guidelines, describe the warning signs and symptoms of H1N1 influenza and offer practical advice and tips on how to protect yourself. Health District officials will discuss the vaccine and its availability. The program is open to all interested members of the community. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children and youth up to 18-years-of-age are at higher risk for contracting infection and complications due to the H1N1 virus. Those who contract the flu may be contagious for 24 to 48 hours before symptoms appear.

DERBY, CT - The Childbirth Center at Griffin Hospital will hold its third annual Perinatal Bereavement Ceremony at 5:30 pm Thursday, October 15 at the hospital. The ceremony is open to individuals and families who have experienced an early pregnancy loss, stillbirth, or newborn death.

The program will feature a ceremonial candle lighting in memory of those lost, short speeches of remembrance by parents, family members, and caregivers, and a poetry reading. Refreshments will be served.

The Griffin Hospital Childbirth Center established this annual event to provide support for parents and families experiencing perinatal loss. The ceremony provides an opportunity for everyone to remember, share, and comfort each other.

DERBY, CT (June 19, 2009) - Griffin Hospital is hosting a 100th Birthday Party on Saturday, June 27, from 11 am to 3 pm and the entire community is invited. Attendees will have an opportunity to tour Griffin Hospital's new Clinical Laboratory and the completed Phase I of the Emergency Department. The final phase of this three-year project, which began in 2007 and included the opening of the Hewitt Ambulatory Care Services Pavilion and the Center for Cancer Care last October, will coincide with the centennial celebration at the end of the year.

Meanwhile, the move into the new Clinical Laboratory was completed this week along with Phase I of the Emergency Department expansion including the new Emergency Department lobby and half of the treatment rooms. When fully completed, the Emergency Department expansion will increase the size...

DERBY, CT - Interested individuals will be able to learn more and sign up for a 12-week phlebotomy course at Griffin Hospital during an open house on Saturday, June 27, from 11am to 3pm. On that date, Griffin Hospital will host a birthday party to celebrate a century of caring for its community. Valley residents are invited to "come back where it all began."

The phlebotomy course will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 8, and run for 12 consecutive weeks with both morning and evening schedules. The course is open to anyone age 18 or older with a High School Diploma or GED. Tuition includes CPR certification, a 40-hour externship, national certification, lab coat and books.
