Griffin Hospital Receives Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award

DERBY, CT (May 9, 2012) – Griffin Hospital has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award.

The award recognizes Griffin Hospital’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.

To receive the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award, Griffin Hospital achieved at least 12 consecutive months of 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality Achievement indicators and achieved at least 75 percent or higher compliance with six of 10 Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality Measures during that same period of time, which are reporting initiatives to measure quality of care.

These measures include aggressive use of medications, such as tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis, cholesterol reducing drugs and smoking cessation, all aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients.

“With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award demonstrates that our staff is committed to providing care that has been shown in the scientific literature to quickly and efficiently treat stroke patients with evidence-based protocols,” said Griffin Hospital Stroke Program Coordinator Carolyn Sylvester RN, BSN, CCRN.

“Griffin Hospital is to be commended for its commitment to implementing standards of care and protocols for treating stroke patients,” said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., chair of the Get With The Guidelines National Steering Committee and director of the TeleStroke and Acute Stroke Services at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. “The full implementation of acute care and secondary prevention recommendations and guidelines is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of stroke patients.”

Get With The Guidelines-Stroke uses the “teachable moment,” the time soon after a patient has had a stroke, when they are most likely to listen to and follow their healthcare professionals’ guidance. Studies demonstrate that patients who are taught how to manage their risk factors while still in the hospital reduce their risk of a second heart attack or stroke. Through Get With The Guidelines-Stroke, customized patient education materials are made available at the point of discharge, based on patients’ individual risk profiles. The take-away materials are written in an easy-to-understand format and are available in English and Spanish. In addition, the Get With The Guidelines Patient Management Tool provides access to up-to-date cardiovascular and stroke science at the point of care.

“The time is right for Griffin Hospital to be focused on improving the quality of stroke care by implementing Get With The Guidelines-Stroke. The number of acute ischemic stroke patients eligible for treatment is expected to grow over the next decade due to increasing stroke incidence and a large aging population,” Sylvester said.

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious, long-term disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.

Get With The Guidelines® is the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s hospital-based quality improvement program that empowers healthcare teams to save lives and reduce healthcare costs by helping hospitals follow evidence-based guidelines and recommendations. For more information, visit heart.org/quality.

Griffin Hospital Receives $50,000 Grant to Expand Breast Cancer Education in Naugatuck Valley

Griffin Hospital will be able to expand breast cancer education to women in the Naugatuck Valley, thanks to a $50,000 grant from Komen Connecticut.

“We are tremendously grateful to Komen Connecticut for supporting our work, which is educating women and saving lives in our community,” said Griffin Hospital President & CEO Patrick Charmel.

The grant will support the Valley Breast Health Initiative, which provides outreach and education to all women, including the uninsured or underinsured, about the importance of breast wellness and early detection and provide screening mammograms to women who otherwise couldn’t afford them.

The initiative will maintain a presence in neighborhoods, businesses, churches, health clubs, etc. in the greater Valley area, with a special focus on Shelton and Naugatuck, and will help navigate patients through the local health care system, working in tandem with partnering organizations.

“Two critical statistics drive Komen Connecticut’s work. Approximately 3,000 Connecticut women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. And Connecticut has the second highest incidence of breast cancer in the United States,” said Anne Morris, Executive Director of Komen Connecticut. “The work of Griffin Hospital is critically important, and we are very pleased to support their efforts to fight breast cancer in Connecticut. Their dedication and resolve is truly commendable.”

“Komen Connecticut and the thousands of volunteers who support their work throughout Connecticut are having a tremendous impact on the health of women in our state – helping to save lives every day. We are pleased to be part of that effort, and will work together in the year ahead to respond to real needs in our community,” said Director Griffin Hospital’s Community Outreach & Parish Nursing Program Daun Barrett, RN.

Komen Connecticut funds innovative and effective, community-based breast health programs that provide education, screening and treatment in local communities throughout the state. Annual grants are determined by the Komen Connecticut Board of Directors in accordance with the Community Profile of Breast Health in Connecticut, a comprehensive local project that researches the breast health services currently available in Connecticut and identifies the gaps in service to our communities.

Based on the Community Profile, Komen Connecticut’s priorities include strengthening and building the capacity of existing breast health providers, promoting the importance of screening and early detection, and increasing screening resources available to underserved women and women with the highest risk. In each of the past three years, Komen Connecticut has invested over $1 million in Connecticut-based breast health programs throughout the state.

“Until we find the cures for breast cancer, these local programs are essential in ensuring that women in our communities have the support and care they need to get and stay healthy,” Morris said.

Griffin Hospital is a 160-bed acute care community hospital serving more than 100,000 residents of the Lower Naugatuck Valley Region. The hospital also serves as the flagship hospital for Planetree, an international leader in patient-centered care and has received national recognition for creating a facility and approach to patient care that is responsive to the needs of patients. The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital combines state-of-the-art technology, a team of highly trained physicians and staff, and the Planetree healing environment to offer patients a comprehensive range of personalized breast care and wellness services.

The Center was one of four cancer centers around the world praised by the magazine for working to change the reputation for cancer centers from the unfriendly “cancer ward” of the past into a “home away from home” that is full of optimism and hope. The Center was selected for its inviting design and unique offerings to patients, including holiday celebrations, a Guided Imagery program, custom music during treatment, patient birthday celebrations, art therapy and exercise programs.

“In addition to offering a calm, comfortable environment with wood accents, artwork and soft lighting, the staff at The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, is always looking for ways to enhance the patient experience,” the article stated. The article also highlighted The Center’s private patient lounges, complimentary massages, fresh-baked cookies and visits from pet-therapy dogs.

Published by Elekta, the Sweden-based manufacturer of radiation therapy technology and software systems, Wavelength is an international publication, reporting on significant innovations in clinical solutions for treating cancer and brain disorders. The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital is one of just two Elekta “show sites” in the country, and the only one on the East Coast. Healthcare professionals and organizations from across the country come to The Center to see its state-of-the-art Elekta Synergy Radiation Treatment System and the radiation room’s patient-centered design that features soothing art and decorative wood paneling to help make treatment a relaxing experience.
