Clinical Pastoral Education Program

Our accredited Clinical Pastoral Education Program provides interfaith professional education for ministry through an intense involvement with persons in need and provides the opportunity for students to grow in their pastoral formation.

Clinical Pastoral Education brings theological students and ministers of all faiths (pastors, priests, rabbis, imams, and others) into supervised encounters with persons in crisis. Out of an intense involvement with persons in need, and feedback from peers and supervisors, students develop new awareness of themselves as persons and of the needs of those to whom they minister. From theological reflection on specific human situations, they gain a new understanding of ministry. Within the interdisciplinary team process of helping persons, they develop skills in interpersonal and inter-professional relationships.

What to Expect

Clinical Pastoral Education incorporates behavioral science and theological reflection, to help students better understand the human condition. Focus is on both the chaplain's experience and that of those receiving ministry.

Students can expect to:

  • Utilize verbatims, case studies and other ministry descriptions to present their ministry to supervisors.
  • Think about groups and social structures as well as individuals in defining their ministry.
  • Be an active part of a dynamic learning group comprised of other students and supervisors, who provide opportunities for mutual supervision, care giving, challenge and appreciation.

Requirements & Prerequisites

Our Clinical Pastoral Education program is geared toward those interested in advanced education who have completed undergraduate degrees and have some theological education.
