DERBY, CT (May 12, 2008) - Griffin Hospital's Digestive Disorders Center nurses have been recognized as New England's Best Nursing Team by ADVANCE for Nurses, the biweekly magazine of the nursing profession.
Griffin Hospital's Digestive Disorders Center nurses were pictured on the cover of the ADVANCE for Nurses New England Region's May 5 edition, and featured in an article titled "Easy to Stomach", which details why Griffin Hospital's 15-person staff was recognized as the magazine's "Best Nursing Team for 2008."
"This is a unique group of nurses," said Barbara Stumpo, MPA, BSN, RN, Vice President of Patient Care Services at Griffin Hospital, "and typically it's included senior staff members who come from the Emergency Department, critical care and other nursing disciplines. They are completely committed to what they do. Every day they come in and take great pride in their work."
The Digestive Disorders Center staff is very involved in promoting colon cancer screenings and cancer prevention through community outreach, which was a factor in the staff also being recognized as Griffin Hospital's Department of the Year in 2007.
According to staff member Maureen Ryan, BSN, RN, who nominated her department for Best Nursing Team, the word that best describes the hospital's Digestive Disorder Center nurses is resilience. "I used the term because I believe the unit has overcome a lot of obstacles in the past year, and we always pull through as a team," said Ryan.
To honor the hard work and achievements of ADVANCE's Best Nursing Team 2008, the nurses received an engraved plaque commemorating the award and each nurse was given a personalized certificate and other ADVANCE keepsakes to recognize their accomplishment
