From Patrick Charmel, President & CEO
Welcome to Griffin Health Services Corporation's Internet Web site. We are pleased to use this communication vehicle to provide information about the many initiatives our subsidiaries have developed. They help fulfill Griffin's dedication to change the provider dominated medical system, to a consumer- driven system that puts the client at the center of care, empowering them to fully participate in their own healing process.
Griffin's commitment is to continuously improve the health of the community, the quality of life and well being of residents and to provide leadership to achieve the vision of making our community a better place in which to live, work, raise a family and enjoy life.
At Griffin Hospital, our mission is to provide personalized, humanistic, consumer-driven health care in a healing environment; to empower individuals to be actively involved in decisions affecting their care and well-being through access to information and education; and to provide leadership to improve the health of the community we serve.
Fundamental to Griffin's philosophy is empowering people and providing the knowledge to make them active partners responsible for maintaining their health and making decisions about their care and treatment. Griffin is committed to listening to patients and the public, developing and offering services, programs and care which focus on prevention and wellness, and to providing quality medical care.
Griffin is among a small number of hospitals that report quality information and patient satisfaction ratings on its Web site. The information is posted in the Performance Indicators section. We believe the posting of this information is consistant with our Planetree philosophy of empowering patients through access to information.
In June, 1994, Griffin Hospital opened the first patient care building in the country designed and constructed to accommodate a Planetree care philosophy. Planetree is an international, non-profit, consumer health organization whose vision is to humanize and demystify the healthcare experience and is a subsidiary of Griffin Health Services Corporation.
Griffin's facility and care model have set a new standard for hospitals and architects. Griffin has won the 1995 Design Award from The Center for Health Design which recognizes design that promotes well-being and healing; the American Hospital Association, American Society for Healthcare Engineering 1996 VISTA Award for new construction; and the New England Hospital Assembly 1996 top design award sponsored by the Boston Society of Architects. Groups from more than 500 hospitals, both domestic and foreign, have visited Griffin since 1994.
The recently renovated Inpatient Psyciatric unit has incorporated Planetree's healing environment which includes the elimination of barriers between patients and staff, the use of familiar furnishings and finishes to reduce anxiety, and emphasis on nature, natural light and the arts to lift the spirit, the creation of comfortable public spaces to encourage social interaction. The new unit offers private and semi-private rooms, a residential style kitchen, a lounge, and a large salt water aquarium. Traditional therapeutic approaches that include individual and group therapy are enhanced with complementary services such as patient education, aroma therapy, arts and entertainment and journaling.
Griffin was featured in Inc. Magazine, on CBS This Morning, CNBC, The Wall Street Journal, Healthy Body , Healthy Mind Series on PBS, in Tom Peter's On Achieving Excellence newsletter, Prevention Magazine, The Healthcare Forum Journal and numerous American Hospital Association, and hospital industry publications.
Most recently, Griffin Hospital celebrated its seventh year on Fortune Magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work for in America" list. Griffin was ranked 4th in 2006, its highest position yet, up from 8th overall the year before. Griffin is the only hospital in the country named to the list seven years in a row. It joins such nationally recognized companies as Microsoft, Nordstroms, Four Seasons Hotels and the Mayo Clinic. Griffin has been the smallest company on the list in terms of revenue, and ranked #1 among small companies this year.
In Search Of Excellence author Tom Peters said: "Griffin Hospital has earned widespread recognition, increased staff and patient satisfaction and bragging rights as the best healthcare environment in the country." The most important part of the quote is "increased patient satisfaction." Our patients now give Griffin Hospital's care the highest ratings in our history.
We believe our web site will help you understand Griffin's commitment and passion for providing a new wellness, prevention health model and consumer-driven services and care. We encourage you to let us know your thoughts on Griffin's philosophy and approach, as well as on our web site.
