Childbirth Education & Support Groups

  

Whether you are giving birth for the first time or are an experienced parent, the anticipation of childbirth can sometimes be overwhelming. The more you learn about pregnancy, childbirth, and infant care, the more comfortable and confident you will be when your baby arrives. The Childbirth Center at Griffin Hospital offers a variety of educational and support programs that will help you and your family prepare for the new arrival.

All About Baby

This is a two hour class for new parents. What to know about baby care, diapers, bath, play, sleep, safety normal growth and development.

Baby & Me for Siblings-to-Be

This class helps children between the ages of two-and-a-half and eight feel special about their new role and teaches parents how to prepare children for the new arrival.

A certified childbirth instructor will discuss:

  • how babies look and behave
  • proper holding and handling of an infant
  • diapering

A tour of the Childbirth Center is included.

Babysitter Training

This class is designed for pre-teens, ages 9-13, and is offered with the hopes of improving critical thinking skills necessary in case of an emergency while babysitting. The purpose of the class is to equip the future babysitter with the skills necessary for them to offer safe and appropriate childcare. This includes physical and emotional interaction with infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and older children.

Upon completion of the class, the student will have a working knowledge of:

  • pediatric CPR and obstructed airways
  • first aid
  • basic fire safety
  • ground rules for babysitting
  • how to deal with normal childhood behavior
  • infant care and feeding
  • toddler care and feeding
  • bathing safety guidelines
  • age appropriate play
  • household and personal safety including poison prevention

Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of the class.

Breastfeeding for Beginners

Our board-certified lactation consultant will help new parents understand the biological process of breast feeding and discuss:

  • how to get started
  • proper positioning
  • recognizing hunger signals
  • frequency and volume of feedings
  • how to use a pump
  • and preparation for your return to work.
Schedule:  Held on the first Tuesday of each month.

Early Pregnancy

A class for first time parents to be taken within the first 15 weeks of pregnancy. Topics include:

  • the pregnancy process
  • female anatomy and physiology
  • fetal development
  • good health habits
    • proper nutrition
    • healthy weight gain
    • proper rest
    • exercise

Grandparenting 101

Parenting styles change from generation to generation. This class can help you avoid unwanted tension through a review of:

  • current guidelines for infant care
  • communication between parents and grandparents
  • the changing roles of grandparents.

Lamaze Refresher

This class is for expectant parents who already have children but would like to review the basics of childbirth preparation.

A certified childbirth instructor will cover:

  • Labor, relaxation, and Lamaze breathing
  • Differences in labor experiences
  • Sibling preparation

Mom to Mom - Social & Support Group

Mom to Mom is a facilitated support and social group for new and expectant mothers and their infants up to one year. Each meeting features a topic relevant to new motherhood and is followed by an hour-long play group.  Meets every Tuesday from 10:00 AM - Noon.

Nursing Moms Support Group

Our Nursing Moms Support Group is facilitated by a board-certified lactation consultant and is open to any woman who is breastfeeding her child. Meets the fourth Tuesday of each month from 7:00 -9:00 PM.

Prepared Childbirth

This class will prepare you and your partner for the various stages of:

  • pregnancy
  • labor and delivery
  • breathing and relaxation techniques
  • pain management, including epidural anesthesia and natural methods
  • postpartum care for mom and baby

A tour of the Childbirth Center is included.

Schedule:  Offered as an all-day Saturday class or a two-session Wednesday evening class.

TotSaver Infant Safety & CPR

A certified CPR instructor will cover CPR and life-saving skills, as well as how to “baby-proof” your home, proper car seat installation and use, household safety, and poison prevention. This course provides you and your family with skills that can turn a life-threatening situation into a life-saving one.
Schedule:  Offered one Tuesday per month, from 7:00 - 9:00 PM.
