The ONQI project is committed to transparency, despite the fact that the ONQI algorithm is predicated on privileged, intellectual property. To that end, the ONQI has been widely vetted during its development. Under terms of non-disclosure agreements, the ONQI has been presented to numerous nutrition scientists in both academia and the food industry, as well as to policy makers and public health officials. In particular, the ONQI was presented in considerable detail to officials at the US FDA in March, 2007. It was presented to officials at the USDA in May, 2007. The ONQI was presented to the Keystone Food & Nutrition Roundtable in July, 2007. By invitation of the FDA, the ONQI was presented during two days of public hearings on front of-package nutrition guidance in September of 2007. Less formal, but equally detailed presentations have been made to leaders at the International Food Information Council and the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
