Griffin Hospital Most Improved in Region

May 10 2004

DERBY, CT (May 10, 2004) - Community residents rate Griffin Hospital the most improved hospital in the region with the highest quality of care. The ratings are the results of a community telephone survey of 360 residents in Valley towns conducted by an independent market research company. The hospital uses the market research company to assess perception of programs, services and care, and to assist in determining community health service needs. The survey compares hospitals in Bridgeport, New Haven and Waterbury as well as Milford and Griffin Hospital.

The survey results confirm a study released recently by Solucient, a nationally recognized health industry research company that named Griffin Hospital as one of the nation's "Top 100" performance improvement leader hospitals. Solucient analyzed the performance of more than 3,500 U.S. hospitals over a five year period to identify the hospitals that demonstrated the most dramatic improvement in profitability, efficiency and quality of care.

"Griffin Hospital was a healthcare pioneer in using corporate type market research to measure perception of Griffin Hospital services and to improve service delivery," said Bill Powanda, Griffin Hospital Vice President. "We have been doing a community survey for almost twenty years and it provides us with invaluable information that guides our service improvement and program development efforts," he said.

The survey also showed that Griffin Hospital maintains its position as the hospital of choice for Valley residents. Griffin Hospital is the first choice hospital for 56% of residents, an increase from 52% in 2001. Griffin Hospital continues to be seen as a hospital on a path of continuous progress and improvement with three out of five (62%) rating Griffin Hospital as very or somewhat improved.

In response to a question asking people to compare their most recent hospital stay to a previous stay, Griffin Hospital was the only hospital where the majority of respondents said their last stay was better than their previous stay.

Those surveyed say they choose emergency rooms because of good doctors, good care, insurance coverage and friendly staff. More than 3 out of 5 (63%) named Griffin Hospital's Emergency Room as their first choice of hospitals in the region and 73% named it as a top choice.

Clearly, Valley residents recognize the progress Griffin Hospital has made and are increasingly making Griffin Hospital their hospital of choice," said Powanda. "Those surveyed said they choose a hospital based on a good previous experience, reputation for quality care and personalized care and treatment. We believe these criteria are the foundation of Griffin Hospital's Planetree patient-centered care model. Community residents have come to understand what Planetree stands for and how it differentiates Griffin Hospital from other hospitals," he said.
