Family playing football in the backyardDating back to at least 1934, Thanksgiving and football have gone together like cranberry sauce and stuffing.

Next week, high school athletes will hit the gridiron on Thanksgiving Day or Thanksgiving eve to take part in this American tradition and television sets across the country will broadcast the NFL’s Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys taking on opponents as families come together to give thanks. All this football is bound to inspire a pick-up game in the yard to work up everyone’s appetite or burn off some calories before dessert.

Dr. Jeffrey KlauserIn preparation for the focus on football and sports in general, Griffin Hospital will host “Stay in the Game,” a free presentation on sports safety and the latest advances in Sports Medicine by Orthopedic Surgeon and Sports Medicine Specialist Jeffrey M. Klauser, M.D., on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the hospital’s Meditation and Learning Center at 130 Division Street, Derby.

The Healthy U Tuesday Talks program entitled "Stay in the Game - Advances in Sports Medicine" originally scheduled for this evening will be rescheduled for a later date. Registrants will be notified about the rescheduled date.

Training under the guidance of world-renowned Dr. James Andrews at the Andrews Institute in Pensacola, Florida, Dr. Klauser has a wealth of expertise in the latest procedures used in treating athletes of all ages. A Shelton native and former member of the Shelton High football and basketball teams, Dr. Klauser understands athletes. He often utilizes minimally invasive, arthroscopic techniques which reduce post-operative recovery time and allow for an early return to work and play. His surgical interests include arthroscopic and open treatment of shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and ankle injuries, as well as general orthopaedics.

So if you or a loved plan to hit the football field or backyard this Thanksgiving, are getting ready to compete in another sport the winter, spring or fall, or maybe have a nagging pain keeps you from your favorite athletic activity, you’re invited to learn about how sports medicine can help make sure there are many safe and sporty Thanksgivings to come.
