Clinical Pastoral Education at Griffin Hospital

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Griffin Hospital

Griffin Hospital offers a twenty-five week, part-time “extended unit” program of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) that runs from September to February. This program is intended to meet the needs of clergy in active ministry, seminary students and selected laypersons who wish to:

  • Develop their capacity for theological reflection.
  • Enhance their sense of pastoral identity.
  • Improve their pastoral ministry skills.

From four to six students will be selected to participate in each unit of CPE.

What to Expect

Students enrolled in our CPE program will be expected to perform ten hours of pastoral ministry per week. Pastoral assignments will be negotiated with students, based on their learning goals, from a variety of clinical services at Griffin Hospital. Students already engaged in ministry, however, may, with the supervisor's permission, arrange to complete some hours of pastoral care in their places of ministry. In addition, students will take part in structured group learning sessions on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  They will also be encouraged to participate in educational events taking place in their assigned areas of ministry, and throughout Griffin Hospital. Students will negotiate a time with the supervisor for one hour of individual supervision every other week. In addition, the supervisor will be available as needed for consultation.

Curriculum and Methodology

Clinical Pastoral Education incorporates behavioral science and theological reflection to help students better understand the human condition. Focus is on both the chaplain's experience and that of those receiving ministry.

Students will:

  • Utilize verbatims, case studies and other ministry descriptions to present their ministry to their peers and supervisor.
  • Think about groups and social structures as well as individuals in defining their ministry.
  • Be an active part of a dynamic learning group comprised of other students and supervisors, who provide opportunities for mutual supervision, care giving, challenge and appreciation.
