The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital and Seymour Pink will co-sponsor a free breast health seminar for the community on Thurs., May 12 at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St., Derby.
The event will feature dinner at the hospital dining room starting at 5:30 p.m. followed by Nancy M. Cappello, Ph.D., Director and Founder of Are You Dense, Inc., and Are You Dense Advocacy Inc., presenting “Are You Dense? Being Smart about Your Breast Health” at 6:30 p.m. In addition, Dr. Denise Barajas, medical director of the Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness, will discuss the latest in preventative heath for breast cancer and trends in breast health.
Cappello’s experience of being diagnosed with advanced-stage breast cancer diagnosis within weeks of a normal mammogram is the inspiration behind Connecticut passing the first density reporting law in the nation in 2009. The law elevated the state as a global leader in density reporting and adjunct screening for women with dense breast tissue, and birthed the density reporting grassroots movement. Are You Dense, Inc., and Are You Dense Advocacy Inc., are patient advocacy nonprofit organizations with the mission is to educate the public about the risks and screening challenges of dense breast tissue to prevent missed, delayed and advanced-stage cancer.
This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. RSVP by April 29 to 203-732-7233.
