Griffin Hospital Receives Two National Awards

By Ken Roberts on 8/1/2007

DERBY, CT (August 1, 2007) - Griffin Hospital has received two national awards related to its Planetree patient-centered care model, for providing an exceptional patient experience and for its employee centric culture. The Journal of Sacred Work of the Baptist Healing Trust selected Griffin Hospital as one of America's Top Ten Healing Hospitals for 2006. Erie Chapman, J.D., President of the Baptist Healing Trust said: "A Healing Hospital plants a culture of Radical Loving Care which pervades every aspect of the organization."

In selecting Griffin Hospital the Journal said: "Griffin Hospital  is a beautiful example of the power of the Planetree model of care. The culture in this organization offers lessons for all Healing Hospitals. CEO Patrick Charmel is clearly leading one of the most employee friendly organizations in America".

Griffin Hospital's second award was from FierceHealthcare, one of the leading sources of healthcare management news for healthcare industry executives. FierceHealthcare named Griffin Hospital one of the ten Most Innovative Acute Care Hospitals in 2007. FierceHealthcare said that the ten hospitals are stepping outside of "business as usual" and getting special things done.

Commenting on Griffin Hospital FierceHealthcare said: "The hospital's high patient satisfaction rates, sitting at 97 percent over five years, are a significant factor in keeping staffers content. As Griffin Hospital President Patrick Charmel sees it, high patient satisfaction scores give employees a feeling of accomplishment, while happy employees make patients feel at home, the kind of virtuous cycle every CEO would like to foster. Griffin Hospital's collaborative, friendly environment is decidedly special."

The two awards add to the national recognition Griffin Hospital has recently received including eight consecutive years on the FORTUNE list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For", being named in 2007 as a "Training Magazine Top 125" for its training and workforce development programs and as a "Top 100 Leadership Development Program" by Leadership Excellence Magazine.

"We appreciate the recognition by these national organizations. They are testament to the collective effort of Griffin Hospital's employees, physicians and volunteers to ensure that those we serve have an exceptional patient experience", said Griffin Hospital Vice President, Bill Powanda.
