DERBY, CT (June 7, 2001) - Modern Maturity, the official publication of AARP has named Griffin Hospital one of 15 "Hospitals With Heart" in the country. Modern Maturity, at 20 million, has the largest circulation of any magazine in the country.
The designation was made based on Griffin Hospital's patient-centered, Planetree care model. The four principles used for the designation are: treat everyone with dignity, share unbiased information with patients and their families, strengthen patient's sense of control and collaborate with patients, families and the broader community in deciding how the hospital looks and functions. It is the first time the magazine named "Hospitals With Heart."
To find the leaders in the hospital industry, Modern Maturity consulted organizations devoted to fostering patient-centered care and interviewed dozens of care givers, hospital administrators and other experts. The facilities named were those most respected by their peers.
Griffin Hospital and its patient-centered care model and patient care facility opened in 1994 and have achieved national recognition as being a leader in changing the way care is delivered at the nation's hospitals. More than 370 hospitals from 27 states and 11 foreign countries have visited Griffin Hospital to tour the facility and learn about the Planetree philosophy and care model. The facility won all four of the top health care design awards. FORTUNE Magazine named Griffin Hospital one of "100 Best Companies to Work For in America" for two consecutive years. Griffin Hospital has been featured in numerous industry publications as well as in Inc. magazine and Newsweek Japan and on the CNBC-produced Wall Street Journal Report.
Of the 15 "Hospitals With Heart", eight are Plantree hospitals. Founded 23 years ago in San Francisco, Planetree is a non-profit organization dedicated to personalizing, humanizing and demystifying the health care experience and the creation of healing environments. In 1992, the Planetree Alliance was founded with Griffin Hospital as the first Alliance member. There are 44 hospitals and health centers as well as 11 health resource centers in the Alliance, all dedicated to a patient-centered model of care that supports and nurtures healing on all levels. Griffin Health Services Corporation, the parent company of Griffin Hospital, bought Planetree in 1997 and relocated it to Derby, CT.
"No recognition is more fitting or meaningful for Griffin Hospital and the other Planetree hospitals than to be named a "Hospital With Heart," said Patrick Charmel, President and CEO of Griffin Health Services Corp. "Being a "Hospital With Heart" requires employees, physicians and volunteers dedicated to viewing care delivery from the patient's perspective and willing to embrace the patient and their family as partners in the healing process. Griffin Hospital and all the hospitals named are responding to today's health care consumer and bringing about industry-wide change in the way hospitals care for patients and their families."
