Patrick Charmel Awarded Yale University's John D. Thompson Award

DERBY, CT (March 31, 2006) - Griffin Hospital President, Patrick Charmel, is the 2006 recipient of the John D. Thompson Distinguished Visiting Fellow Award from Yale University. The fellowship honors Professor Thompson and his distinguished contribution as an educator and researcher in health administration, including his pioneering work in developing the Medicare payment system.

The purpose of the fellowship is to bring a leader in health administration to Yale?s public health school to share their career experiences with current students and to discuss emerging challenges in health administration.

Previous honorees include Joseph Zaccagnino, former President of Yale-New Haven Hospital, Congresswoman Nancy Johnson, Gail Wilensky, Ph.D Senior Scientist, Project Hope and Gail Warden, President of the Henry Ford Health System.

After graduating from Quinnipiac University, Charmel received a Master of Public Health Degree from Yale University in 1983. He has been associated with Griffin Hospital since 1979 when he served as a student intern, then serving in a number of administrative positions until he was appointed President in 1998. During his tenure he has positioned Griffin Hospital as an award-winning innovative organization, recognized as an industry leader in providing personalized, humanistic, consumer-driven health care in a healing environment.

He was appointed by the U.S. Secretary for Health and Human Services to a three year term as a member of the National Advisory Council for Healthcare Research and Quality. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Hospital Association and is a member of the Board of Directors of Qualidigm, a nationally recognized quality improvement organization. He is also Vice Chair of the Board of Governors of the Quinnipiac University Alumni Association and Vice Chair of Board of the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce.
