Help Make Health a Priority for the Men in Your Life
June is Men’s Health Month and the home to Father’s Day, making this a good time to focus on everything men need to do to get (and stay) healthy. Getting into the habit of going to an annual physical is especially important for men, who are 25 percent less likely than women to see their healthcare provider each year, and almost 40 percent more likely to skip recommended cholesterol screenings.
When a man skips an annual physical, he’s more likely to miss on important screenings for chronic health condition such as diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as the important preventative screenings that are recommended for men after age 50, such as colon cancer, osteoporosis and prostate cancer.

WTNH Channel 8 recently featured Griffin caregivers on its CT Style program, profiling how the hospital is leading the way in population health management and the delivery of high quality, consumer-focused care.
The series highlighted Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Philip Minotti, of The Center for Joint Health at Griffin Hospital, to help viewers learn how they a handle on their bone health and options for joint replacement.
The injuries Dr. Minotti sees are mostly related to age, with arthritis wearing joints out.
“The calendar doesn't stop for anyone, your joints will continue to age,” Dr. Minotti said. It is Griffin Hospital's job to give their patients the opportunity to live an active healthy life again.
Dr. Minotti takes a direct anterior approach when it comes to joint replacement which causes less trauma to the body, less pain and quicker return to function.

Help Provide Peace of Mind for Our Patients
Griffin Hospital is looking for volunteers to help provide patients and caregivers peace of mind about future healthcare decisions.
The hospital’s new Advance Care Planning Volunteer Program will train individuals to help guide others in developing a plan for their care in the event they are unable to speak for themselves. Advance Care Planning (ACP) is a process of understanding, reflecting on, and discussing individual goals, beliefs and values in order to determine one's healthcare wishes and assign a healthcare representative to make decisions on his or her behalf.
The program includes an online learning component and interactive classes.

Start the Journey to a Rewarding Career in Healthcare – Become a CNA!
The Griffin Hospital School of Allied Health Careers is offering an evening session of its Accelerated Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program starting July 16 to help individuals start a fulfilling career in healthcare.
The CNA course offers students an affordable and condensed 6-week schedule with classes Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m.-1 p. m. Course content includes infection control, legal and ethical responsibilities, communications, body mechanics, moving and positioning residents, personal care skills, nutrition, measuring vital signs, and restorative care. The CNA course tuition fee includes the course book, CPR training, and malpractice insurance coverage for the clinical rotation. The CNA clinical experience will be at Griffin Hospital and a long-term care facility from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. for 40 hours. After successfully completing the course and clinical experience, students will be qualified to take the State exam for certification as a Nursing Assistant in Connecticut.

Take Control of Your Chronic Health Conditions
Griffin Hospital will host a free six-week workshop this summer to help individuals suffering from health conditions take back control of their lives.
The Live Well Chronic Disease Self-Management Workshop provides health information and strategies to help those with health conditions like pain, anxiety, diabetes, depression, heart disease, and arthritis increase their energy and take control of their health.
Along with clinical care, participants will learn ways to cope with difficult emotions, depression, and stress/anxiety, reduce pain, improve mobility, increase energy, increase physical activity, eat healthier, use medications appropriately, and solve everyday problems and communicate effectively with family and health care providers.

Griffin Hospital Recognizes Dedicated, Exemplary Employees
Griffin Hospital recently honored more than 600 employees and physicians who reached service milestones of 5 years and more and announced the employee and department of the year award winners at its 48th Annual Service Awards Dinner.
Environmental Services Quality Control Supervisor Michael Currie, of Waterbury, was named Griffin Hospital’s 2018 Employee of the Year and the Surgical Physician Assistant Program won Department of the Year.
Currie has been a caregiver at Griffin for 10 years and is directly responsible for managing hands-on educational sessions for staff. He conducts rounding throughout the hospital which contributes to Griffin’s consistently high HCAHPS scores for cleanliness. Coworkers praise Currie for his excellence in providing customer service to hospital patients and visitors and his ability to communicate effectively with all caregivers regardless, of their position, to make sure all questions are answered and requests are met. In his supervisory role, Currie has taken on numerous challenges, including running the department’s bed board, consistently showing exceptional performance and strong leadership in each new responsibility.
Griffin Hospital’s Surgical PA Program was honored with Department of the Year for providing clinical support that is integral to the recent growth and success of the hospital’s surgical services. The program was established more than 10 years ago, and the group has grown exponentially with the addition of services and coverage expectations. Surgeons rely on the Surgical PA Program to provide high-level care to their patients and to provide detailed updates on their patients’ healing. The PA service is also always available to assist other hospital departments with emergency case assistance, nursing and care coordination expectations, floor procedures, consultations, emergency codes and rapid response events, and providing patients’ families with updates. The group showed their dedication to the growth and success of Griffin’s surgical department recently with their involvement in the implementation of the robotic surgery program. The surgical PAs and APRN quickly made themselves available to participate in the training necessary to meet the assisting needs and post-operative care requirements of the new program.
Volunteers Sought for MS, Insomnia Study
The Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center and Multiple Sclerosis Treatment Center, both located at Griffin Hospital, are seeking volunteers for a study on Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and insomnia.
This study will compare mindfulness meditation to sleep hygiene counseling in treating insomnia and improving quality of life in individuals with MS.
To participate, volunteers must be adults with a diagnosis of MS who suffer from chronic insomnia. They must be willing to come to Griffin Hospital for three assessments throughout the study, and to attend a weekly, two-hour training session for eight weeks and one eight-hour weekend session, and wear a Fitbit activity monitor (provided to volunteers) for several weeks to record their sleep data.
Volunteers will be randomly assigned to training on either mindfulness or sleep hygiene, which will be offered at either Griffin Hospital or the Yale Stress Center. They will receive $200 for their role in the training and assessment, which will be provided free of charge. This study is funded by a grant from the State of Connecticut’s Biomedical Research Trust Fund.
