Home|The Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) at Griffin Hospital

Hospitalization can be challenging for older adults, with 30% to 50% experiencing a decline in their physical and cognitive abilities during their stay. Early mobilization and increased physical activity are generally associated with shorter lengths of hospital stay and improved discharge outcomes.

HELP is an evidence-based quality improvement program whose purpose is to prevent hospitalized patients over the age of 70 from experiencing a decline in both their physical and mental health during their hospital stay. HELP provides personalized care for seniors in an effort to maintain and support their optimal level of independence.

KEY COMPONENTS OF HELP

ACTIVE RANGE OF MOTION EXERCISES
Volunteers are trained by physical therapists and are guided by the nursing staff. They encourage movement such as active range of motion exercises. These exercises help maintain or improve the flexibility and mobility of joints and muscles.

COGNITIVE ORIENTATION AND THERAPEUTIC ACTIVITIES
Engage patients with structured activates such as reading, puzzles and games to maintain cognitive function and reduce confusion. Volunteers provide meaningful conversation to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness.

HYDRATION AND NUTRITION ASSISTANCE
Supporting proper nutrition and hydration by monitoring intake, assisting with meals, and reducing risk factors for dehydration and malnutrition.

VISION AND HEARING SUPPORT
Ensuring patients have access to and properly use their glasses, hearing aids, and other sensory aids to maintain awareness and prevent confusion.

RELAXATION AND COMFORT
Implementing non-pharmacologic strategies to promote restful sleep, such as “Soft Touch” and optimizing sleep environments.

PLANETREE COMPLEMENTARY SERVICES
Offering holistic and person-centered care experiences such as Reiki, Pet Therapy Visits, Patient Vital Stories, and Hair Salon Appointments to enhance emotional well-being and comfort.
