Take Control of Urinary Incontinence with Bulkamid

Griffin Faculty Physicians Urology has added a new, minimally-invasive treatment option for individuals diagnosed with stress urinary incontinence.

Bulkamid is a safe and effective method to treat muscle weakness that causes urinary incontinence. Stress incontinence is common in women and can increase with age. Additional factors include childbirth, obesity or pelvic floor disorder.

Stress urinary incontinence is caused by dysfunction in the group of muscles at the bottom of the pelvis, also known as the pelvic floor. This weakness prevents the urethra from fully closing when sudden pressure is put on the bladder, allowing urine to leak out when a person coughs, laughs, walks or exercises.

Bulkamid is a soft hydrogel that is injected into 3 or 4 locations in the urethral wall through a minimally-invasive procedure called urethral bulking. Introducing just a small amount of Bulkamid (about the size of a pea) to these areas can restore the natural closing pressure of the urethra, preventing urine from leaking out during normal daily activities.
