Griffin Hospital Neurologist Heads Study Group in FDA Approval of New Drug for Multiple Sclerosis

DERBY, CT (December 22, 2004) - Griffin Hospital neurologist Dr. Joseph Guarnaccia is heading one of two study groups in a two-year clinical trial which has had such demonstrable first year results, the Federal Drug Administration has already approved use of the new drug to help people who have multiple sclerosis.The drug, natalizumab or Tysabri, is for people with relapses of multiple sclerosis.

DERBY, CT (May 12, 2004) - On Wednesday, May 26th from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Gastroenterologist, Scott Choi, M.D. of the Griffin Hospital Digestive Disorders Center will discuss Gastric Esophageal Reflux Disease and how it can interfere with sleep and how it can affect those who suffer from sleep apnea. Griffin Hospital Most Improved in Region

DERBY, CT (May 10, 2004) - Community residents rate Griffin Hospital the most improved hospital in the region with the highest quality of care. The ratings are the results of a community telephone survey of 360 residents in Valley towns conducted by an independent market research company. The hospital uses the market research company to assess perception of programs, services and care, and to assist in determining community health service needs. The survey compares hospitals in Bridgeport, New Haven and Waterbury as well as Milford and Griffin Hospital.

DERBY, CT (October 15, 2003) - Jeri Opuszynski, a member of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Griffin Hospital, was chosen to receive the prestigious Wholeness of Life Award from the Healthcare Chaplaincy of New York. The event will take place on November 13 in New York where Opuszynski will be among 18 honorees from healthcare organizations in New York and Connecticut. A special reception in Jeri's honor will be held at the hospital on October 16 at 2:30 pm in the main cafeteria. Herb Prem, a Board of Trustee from The HealthCare Chaplaincy will be in attendance to assist Patrick Charmel, Griffin Hospital CEO in presenting Opuszynski with the citation.

Valley Parish Nurse Program and Coordinator Daun Barrett Receives "Spirit of Caring" Award

DERBY, CT (August 19, 2003) - Daun Barrett, R.N., Coordinator of the Valley Parish Nurse Program (VPNP) has been selected as Griffin Hospital's first Planetree "Spirit of Caring" award winner. Planetree started the "Spirit of Caring" award to publicly recognize health caregivers who personalize and humanize the health care experience for patients and their families and programs or services supporting extraordinary achievement in patient-centered care. The Valley Parish Nurse Program was selected as Griffin Hospital's "Spirit of Caring" award program.
